The most basic unit will have a capacity of about five watts of power. That is the most you should get. A good rule of thumb is the higher the wattage, the larger the solar collector or panel. The size of the solar generator also determines the maximum output watts it can produce.
There are two basic types of solar generators. There are those made of aluminum, which is the most commonly seen and available solar generator; and then there are those made of silicon, which are a bit more expensive but more durable and which is also more efficient. Aluminum solar panels are lightweight and easy to assemble. However, they tend to not be as strong as silicon solar panels. When it comes to durability, aluminum tends to break down the quickest.
Another point to consider when buying solar generators is how the panels will be installed. Some people would prefer the panels are mounted on the roof whereas others want the panels to be installed on poles across the top of their RV or camping gear. On the other hand, some prefer to have solar generators that are bolted to the ground, thus eliminating any possibility of damage or loosening of the screws.
Solar generators can also be powered by gas-powered generators. These are popular among Rvers as they are easier to start and get going. However, gas-powered generators tend to be less efficient than solar power. They also produce toxic fumes that you want to avoid if at all possible.
As with everything else, the final choice of a solar generator depends on what you’re going to use it for. If you are simply going to use it as an emergency back-up power source, then solar chargers would be your best option. If you plan on having a permanent solar charger on your RV, then a gas-powered generator would be your best option because you wouldn’t have to worry about hooking it up to any electrical device.
